  53. Dave Stockton (and Gary Coffman, by acclamation :-) have both said that you'd
  54. be better off with a mobile rig. I made the opposite decision, for a reason 
  55. that you mentioned: it's easy to use an HT in the car, but hard to hang 
  56. a mobile on your belt. I have spent more on the HT solution than I would
  57. have on a mobile, but none of the extra money spent is wasted: it went into
  58. a small amplifier and a speaker-mic (which you mentioned). The speaker-mic
  59. is useful when carrying the HT for long periods at public service events
  60. as well as for use in the car. The amplifier is small and light enough to 
  61. take on hikes, even with a battery supply capable of powering it for 
  62. half an hour key-down. Even though today's mobiles are a lot smaller
  63. than the ones available when I made the decision, they're still power-
  64. hungry and so not a good choice for people-powered portable operation.
  65.  
  66. I also use an HT for packet, mostly because I have it. It's an older one,
  67. which means that it has a narrow front end and isn't as susceptable to 
  68. overload as the newer ones. The only problem I have with it is that the 
  69. RX is about 3 KHz off, but that's a problem with the specific radio, not
  70. with the idea of using an HT. 
  71.  
  72. That said, I will buy a "real" mobile radio when I feel like spending the
  73. money. There is a definite price in convenience paid in having to connect
  74. the antenna and speaker-mic every time I get in the car. It's also true
  75. that the HT's user interface is designed for two-handed operation, and
  76. the small buttons aren't ideal for controlling the radio in the car.
  77. However, I'm satisfied with the performance of the setup.
  78.  
  79. I also concur with a negative comment that Dave made, but unfortunately
  80. have no positive advice to go with it: the recommendation that you stay away
  81. from the earliest HF radios with general coverage receivers. I have a
  82. Kenwood TS-430 that I bought when it first came out. It has so many birdies 
  83. that when I finally replace it, I'm going to donate the radio to the
  84. San Diego Zoo for use in their aviary. (Does anyone else have this problem
  85. with a TS-430?)

  150. Thanks for the very informative post.  Although it is impossible to say with
  151. certainty that there is NO risk, from EMR, it is clear that if there IS a risk,
  152. it is a very low one.  When one compares the possible risk from EMR to very
  153. clear and significant risks that we all take every day, any risk is obviously
  154. insignificant.

  156. Interestingly, a clearly documented producer of cancer in both animals and
  157. humans is excess caloric intake, and when I look around a lot of hamfests, if
  158. there is excess cancer in hams, that may be the reason rather than exposure to
  159. EMR.  None of the power line studies of which I am aware have been
  160. adequately controlled for such things as socio-economic status, etc., but
  161. places such as New Jersey are apparently nevertheless rushing to impose taxes
  162. on emitters of EMR on the theory that EMR is carcinogenic.  I have even heard
  163. predictions that EMR litigation will be the "new asbestos litigation."
  164.  
  165. Let's hope that the news media don't feed the sense of hysteria that many
  166. people feel when confronted by something they don't understand, and that we dt
  167. end up spending billions of dollars dealing with a problem that may not even
  168. exist.

  388. too bad, though -- my birthday is 12/31/62, and it was rather amusing to have

  427. complaints about quality and ergonomics to the manufacturer. Because the 
  428. manufacturer responded to the suggestions in a positive manner and took the

  448. My information is a bit old by now but here is what I know:

  453. at least in their original implementations used 5 level Baudot
  454. code at 60wpm.

  456. For transmission purposes RTTY uses FSK at 850 or (now) 170 Hz shift.
  457. TDDs use an ASK system with a single tone keyed off and on
  458. (on for space).  I think the tone is 1800Hz.

  464. Amateur radio RTTY machines and TDD machines were originally
  465. obtained from the phone company, typically surplus model 15s.
  466.  
  467. The individual who developed the TDD system in the mid-1960s
  468. was Robert Weitbreicht, W6NRM (SK), a deaf ham who also
  469. developed various TUs for amateur radio use and published
  470. in RTTY Journal.
  471.  
  472. If you observe use of TDDs you will note the use of '88'
  473. (sometimes not being too careful about the number of digits)
  474. and the ending of transmissions by sending 'SK'.
  475. Anyone care to speculate on where this usage came from?
  476.  
  477. Note: I am posting this because I would like everyone to be
  478. aware of the development of this system by a ham.  And because
  479. I am not sure of all the details but someone out there in netland
  480. will be happy to correct me and fill in details.  :-)
